What changed in September 2026

Portugal's TVDE law was amended by Law 59/2026, in force since 1 September 2026. Four things matter most if you are deciding to become a driver:

• There is no deadline for drivers to re-register. The 120-day period you may have read about applies to the platforms, not to you. Certificates already issued stay valid until their own expiry date (article 4).
• Vehicle age: under 10 years from first registration — or up to 12 years if the car is fully electric (article 12(7)). A hybrid, even plug-in, stays at ten. That is two extra years of use from the same purchase.
• Platform commission is capped at 25% of the fare, before VAT (article 15(3)). The cap is the same for every platform, so compare them by net earnings per busy hour, not by the advertised percentage.
• Ten hours in any 24, across all platforms combined (article 13). Signing up to a second app does not give you more hours.
